Contemporary Approaches to Performance Management

The traditional approach to a formal, annual performance review with each of your employees is being replaced by a year-round approach to continuous improvement performance management.

The concept of managing performance through a continuous improvement process reflects the changing nature of business today, and the tools used to manage performance of employees need to align in conjunction. This approach moves away from the elements of the traditional performance management approach, where generally employees are given a satisfactory or non–satisfactory ranking which often serves as a de-motivator. It can also result in office politics and unproductive comparisons between employees. As employees skills and abilities grow, they should be nurtured and developed in positive and constructive ways.

Here are the evaluation steps used in the continuous improvement process cycle:

Continuous performance management focuses on proactive behaviour. There are numerous ways to lead an employee to improved performance, well before any major issues develop. Here are some proven strategies to help your team excel:

      1. Review job descriptions regularly to ensure that roles and responsibilities continue to represent what is needed for an employee to succeed within your organization.
      2. Provide clear expectations, timelines and measurement of what success in a role looks like.
      3. Prepare, or request, regular status reporting and updates on completed tasks, and work with future deadlines, to monitor productivity.
      4. Provide workflow, timelines and process guidelines to eliminate uncertainty.
      5. Provide regular feedback that is constructive and provides guidance where needed, focusing on growth and positive reinforcement.
      6. Provide recognition, and rewards, to employees who are good performers, both formally and informally.
      7. For any employee who is under-performing, steps can be taken to guide them towards improvement if handled in a non-contentious and timely basis, with a clear plan of action.
