Travel Coverage

Important Information on Travel Coverage

When you travel outside of your province of residence you are responsible for costs that are the result of a medical emergency or accident.

If you need to unexpectedly cancel your trip or return home earlier than planned, then all the money you have spent on your trip is lost.

The solution is Out-of-Province/Country Travel insurance, trip cancellation insurance and also baggage insurance.  Having this coverage can ensure that unexpected costs, that are beyond your control, will be covered.

It is important to know the basics of Out-of-Province/Country Travel Insurance – how it works and what it covers – so you are adequately prepared.

  • Out-of-Province/Country Travel Insurance is designed to cover losses arising from sudden, unexpected, and unforeseeable emergencies, for you or an eligible dependent, occurring while you are temporarily travelling outside your province of residence for vacation, business, or education.
    • A sudden, unexpected, and unforeseeable medical emergency means an injury, illness or acute episode of a disease that requires immediate medical attention and could not have been reasonably anticipated based on a prior medical condition.
    • If a pre-existing condition is considered unstable and its effects are not considered to be those of a sudden and unexpected illness, the incurred expenses may not be paid.
    • A stable medical condition is generally defied as one where there has been no new diagnosis, treatment or prescribed medication, no change in treatment or change in medication (quantity, frequency, and type), no new symptoms or a change in symptoms.
    • If prior to departure, medical evidence for an existing medical condition suggests a reasonable expectation that treatment or hospitalization could be required while travelling, a resulting medical episode would not be covered under your insurance.
  • Along with coverage for medical emergencies, also included is coverage for transportation by ambulance, repatriation to your province of residence, nursing fees, dentist fees for injury to nature teeth, transportation of a medical escort, return of vehicle, and if a death occurs – preparation and transportation of the body, or coordination of burial/cremation on the spot.
  • To ensure you thoroughly understand what your coverage provides, always review the wording in your benefit booklet for coverage details, limitations, and exclusions.
    • The Travel Provider for your Out-of—Province/Country Insurance can clarify the term ‘sudden, unexpected, and unforeseeable illness’ and confirm whether coverage may be limited in any way by an insureds pre-existing condition.
    • It is recommended that you contact the provider before you leave for your trip if you have any general questions, need clarification on coverage provisions, and if you have specific questions related to a medical condition for yourself or an eligible dependent.
    • Please refer to the contact information for Out-of-Province/Country coverage provider on your benefit card or in your benefit booklet.
  • You will need to provide the Travel Assistance Service with your Identification/Certificate and Group Policy number when you call. You will also need to provide your Provincial Health Insurance plan number. FYI – active provincial coverage is a requirement to have Out-of-Province/Country insurance coverage for yourself and eligible dependents.
  • When travelling, assistance is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per, 365 days a year
    • Call the provider as soon as reasonably possible in the event of a medical emergency.
    • If you need to cancel a trip, call the Travel Assistance Provider to start the claim process, if Trip Cancellation coverage is part of your Out-of-Province/Country coverage.
  • To ensure you travel safely, always check the Government of Canada website for travel advise and advisories. It is suggested that no matter where you travel, make sure to check this site when you are planning your trip and again shortly before you leave, as safety and security conditions may change.
    • IMPORTANT: If a travel advisory is in place, it may limit or restrict coverage under Out-of-Province/Country Travel Insurance.
